{"id":3818,"date":"2022-05-18T14:05:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T14:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lumien.io\/?p=3818"},"modified":"2022-06-15T14:22:32","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T14:22:32","slug":"mental-health-and-gut-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/culture-analytics.co.uk\/us\/mental-health-and-gut-health\/","title":{"rendered":"How does your employees\u2019 gut affect their day-to-day life?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.2&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<em>As we are becoming more and more conscious of our wellbeing and improving our mental health, it\u2019s now time to think about how your employees\u2019 diets can affect their everyday mood and performance in the workplace.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We talk to Sian Baker, head of health and nutrition services, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehealthhub.com\/\"><em>Health Hub<\/em><\/a><em> \u2013 an online health platform helping individuals to take control of their health \u2013 and discuss why diet is so important to an individual\u2019s overall mental health, and how it can support productivity in the workplace.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u2018You are what you absorb\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people don\u2019t realise the effect diet has on your overall mental health because they don\u2019t realise how much of the serotonin we produce is made in the gut,\u201d says Sian Baker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA huge 95% of all serotonin in the body is made in your gut, meaning if it isn\u2019t healthy or happy, your ability to produce the hormone can be impaired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSerotonin is your natural mood stabiliser. It regulates anxiety, happiness, sleep and overall mood, so if production is inhibited, this can have an impact, sometimes a profound one, on how you feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Supporting your mental health with your diet<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cFor optimum serotonin production, the amino acid, tryptophan, is important and can be found in various high protein foods, such as nuts, eggs, cheese and red meat, for example. A low protein diet can reduce the ability to produce serotonin effectively and increase the possibility of mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression.\u201d continues Sian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re struggling with your sleep, it\u2019s important to ensure you\u2019re incorporating enough magnesium into your diet, which can be found in wholegrains and vegetables and can often be found wanting in a diet high in processed foods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can all admit we\u2019re guilty of using caffeine, sugar and alcohol as stress relievers, but these can perpetuate mental health problems by elevating the stress response, blood sugar spikes and causing inflammation in the gut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting the ratio right between omega 3 and 6 fatty acids is important for the body as a whole, and definitely for the gut when talking inflammation. Most people consume enough omega 6, as it\u2019s found in oils used in many pre-packaged foods, however omega 3 \u2013 found in oily fish, seeds, nuts and green leafy vegetables \u2013 is frequently under consumed. Omega-3 is anti-inflammatory and can help to boost gut health to improve mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The effect of nutrition in the workplace<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAs people often don\u2019t recognise the link between nutrition or physical health and mental health, employers will often focus on tackling workplace mental health with programmes, such as resilience training, rather than looking at the whole picture,\u201d comments Chris, our director here at Lumien.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur data shows how poor wellbeing impacts employees 27% of the time, which is seeing companies lose an average of 17% in productivity. This annually equates to approximately \u00a35,318.45 per employee. In addition, research has shown poor nutrition can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyperformance.co.uk\/nutrition-at-work-how-you-can-help-your-employees\/\">reduce an employee\u2019s efficiency<\/a> by 20%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, it\u2019s not just nutrition and poor mental health affecting the workplace, it works the other way around too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, increased workload and stress can affect an employee\u2019s nutrition. If they\u2019re unable to take time to eat in the working day, reliant on caffeine or sugar to boost energy, or relieving stress with fatty foods or alcohol after work, this will affect their gut health, which in turn will affecting mental health and productivity at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Supporting employees\u2019 mental health through diet<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMost businesses think of nutrition as something that individuals need to address for themselves at home. However, due to the effect employee nutrition has on business performance, it\u2019s time to consider how a holistic approach can boost business growth and team retention rates,\u201d continues Chris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkplace nutrition programmes can include coaching programmes or subsidised nutritious lunches or snacks, for example, to promote a balanced diet alongside wellbeing and mental health support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, it\u2019s about employers taking responsibility for their employees\u2019 health with a proactive strategy to support happiness and health in their roles.
