{"id":2043,"date":"2019-09-24T08:55:20","date_gmt":"2019-09-24T08:55:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lumien.io\/?p=2043"},"modified":"2020-06-23T08:57:03","modified_gmt":"2020-06-23T08:57:03","slug":"youre-fired-do-we-need-more-emotion-in-the-boardroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/culture-analytics.co.uk\/us\/youre-fired-do-we-need-more-emotion-in-the-boardroom\/","title":{"rendered":"You\u2019re Fired! \u2013 Do we need more emotion in the boardroom?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you speak to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">knowledgeable people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the manufacturing industry, they will tell you we&#8217;ve entered the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">4<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">industrial revolution\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013 the age of automated systems and AI; the age that George Orwell <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">predicted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">heralding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">arrival of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a virtual\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018big brother\u2019 in the workplace. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For years\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">science fiction films have <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">predicated\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">future:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the arrival of the machine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">subjugation of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">human<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and more importantly, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the exit of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">human emotion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But just how <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">likely\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can we, as humans,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">avoid\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">falling into\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cience fiction pitfall?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nteresting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ly,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the foreboding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of this era comes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as part and parcel of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rapid globalisation\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of tech companies worldwide, an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">example of which is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Apple<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s entry into the trillion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dollar clu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">combined\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">massive increase\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and concerns about, smartphone technology and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">social media<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, has led us into a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">24<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hour society\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that not everyone is comfortable with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s is always the case, these\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">technological and social\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">advancement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s have both advantages and disadvantages,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a major <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">disadvantage, certainly for healthcare practitioners,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">appears\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to be our Mental Health<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Indeed, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bupa <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recently stated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Issues like body image insecurity and feeling anxious aren\u2019t new, but it seems social media may be a way of pouring gas on the fire<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the UK alone, prescriptions of anti-depressants rose 108.5% between 2006 and 2016, whilst it is estimated that 1 in 6 people are now affected by poor mental health, according to the B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">BC<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. So, it would be foolish to believe that Mental Health issues are not on the rise, particularly with the BBC releasing programmes on Mental Health, like the one involving the future King of England talking about Mental Health concerns with Professional footballers, managers and coaches, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">namely <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cA Royal Team Talk\u201d. It\u2019s clear then that society as a whole is also awakening to this global epidemic.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, as the pathways of Industry 4.0 and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Mental Health epidemic collide, what can w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e learn from the many science fiction\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">films <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">predicting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this future? <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s known\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that becoming a data-led and\/or data-driven organisation can have a major effect on the bottom <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">line and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stop the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">HiPP<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">effect (Highest Paid Persons Opinion)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ut what sort of data do we currently collect\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to drive change<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">? <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Business-centric <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">data <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tends to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">based <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">around processes <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rather than the people <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that are part of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">those processes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, whether that is a product<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ion\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">line,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a supply chain, or footfall through a shopping mall. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You only have to look at six-sigma analysis to understand this.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, if you speak to any CEO, they will tell you that the success of any organisation is built on the people that work there. Recent thinking has led us away from being simply customer-centric, to being employee-centric, on the premise that if our employees are happy, they will in turn treat our customers well and make our customers happier to deal with us. So, this begs the question \u2013 why do none of the statistics we collect consider our internal human processes, such as emotions and mental health, and the impact this potentially has on our business outcomes?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you talk to \u2018employee-centric\u2019 companies, they\u2019ll say that they are all about culture, values, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018meaning\u2019 to the work environment. And what\u2019s wrong with that? In fact, new graduates now state that they prefer a meaningful job and a fulfilling career over being well-off. Companies talk about \u2018empowering the knowledge-based worker\u2019 and that, if employees are kept happy, then they will deliver more than expected. But how can companies achieve this without meaningful data about how happy their employees truly are? If this is the key measure, why is there no data to underpin it? Wouldn\u2019t it be useful if we could understand the impact a business decision has on the emotions and mental health of our employees, and in turn understand how this will affect our core business outcomes? It might actually affect decision-making or, in some cases, lead to decisions being reversed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">knowledge\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has such a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">massive <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">effect and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can effectively cloud judgement around our <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">long-term <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">business vision, surely, we shou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ld be doing something about it?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Management Theorist <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Simon <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sinek\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">talks extensively about different leadership techniques, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">like <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">how a man<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ger will make you feel \u2018safe\u2019, and that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">decisions are based on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more than just\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">data, but <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">feelings as well. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Apple u<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">se this effectively all the time, to market to human emotions. In fact, looking back, so have Coca Cola, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Samsung, Mercedes, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amazon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026.,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the list is endless. All of t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hese companies <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">look\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at human emotions <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as represented by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">data all the time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">about the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tracking\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and understanding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the public\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">view, customers and prospects<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211; <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people they do not know &#8211; <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not employees.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Obviously,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">must\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be wary of developing a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">workforce version of Cambridge <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Analytica<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">surely,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we can begin to use data to understand the role <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">employees\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emotions have on our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bottom-line, which should, in turn, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">inform\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">boardroom decisions. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Should we not be trying to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">understand the current \u2018feel\u2019 of the organisation, and utilise this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">positively\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">boardroom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, instead of trying to remove it completely<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the end of the day<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">if we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">re so against <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the vision of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a bunch of robots with Aus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">trian accents running our board<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rooms, we need to find ways to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">combine data about human emotions with classic business data, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and begin to move towards a far more efficient, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">real-world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all-encompassing-d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ata-centric organisation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.9&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;] If you speak to knowledgeable people\u00a0in the manufacturing industry, they will tell you we&#8217;ve entered the 4th\u00a0industrial revolution\u00a0\u2013 the age of automated systems and AI; the age that George Orwell predicted, heralding\u00a0the arrival of\u00a0a virtual\u00a0\u2018big brother\u2019 in the workplace.
